From a rail stop to a Redstone suburb

According to the Alabama Historical Association marker for the city, Madison was established in 1856 as a shipping station on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad and incorporated in 1869. It stayed small until Redstone Arsenal and Jetport growth in the 1950s and 1960s pulled new families west of Huntsville.

Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates put Madison at 67,968 residents on July 1, 2025, up 19.4% from the 2020 estimates base. Most of the city sits in Madison County, with a portion in Limestone County.

Newer homes still get mold

Madison's housing is young for the region. The American Community Survey (2020–2024) puts the median year built at 2001, and about 74% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. But mold needs moisture, and North Alabama supplies plenty: NOAA's 1991–2020 normals at Huntsville International Airport show 54.29 inches of rain a year and summer dew points near 66–70°F from June through August. Muggy air that meets a cool duct or crawl space joist can condense.

Common problem spots homeowners ask about include:

  • Crawl spaces, where humid summer air settles on framing and insulation
  • Attics with roof leaks or poor ventilation
  • Bathrooms and walls behind leaking supply lines

Crawl spaces are worth a look here. NAHB analysis of Census construction data found that 42.2% of new single-family homes started in 2021 in the East South Central region (Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee) had a crawl space, compared with roughly 9–11% nationally. That is regional context, not a Madison count, but it explains why crawl space mold and encapsulation quotes come up so often.

Water history: Portal Lane, 1999

Flooding is not only a Huntsville story. The National Weather Service's summary of the June 28, 1999 flash flood, the worst in the Huntsville area since 1973, lists flooding on Portal Lane in Madison alongside the hard-hit Aldridge Creek floodplain. About 300 homes and businesses flooded across the area. EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth. Our guide to water, flood and storm-damage mold walks through those first two days.

What a Madison mold quote usually covers

Companies typically find the moisture source first, then size the job. Typical national ranges run $1,200–$3,750 for a common remediation job (This Old House, 2026) and $10–$30 per square foot (Fixr, 2025). These are estimates, not quotes. See the full mold remediation cost guide for room-by-room ranges.

Alabama has no mold license. ADPH says there is no state accreditation or certification for mold testing or remediation contractors. ADPH suggests looking for IICRC-certified firms; ask any company for its training and certifications, insurance, and an HBLB license number for rebuild work over $10,000.

Madison mold questions

Do newer Madison homes really get mold?

They can. Mold follows moisture, not the age of the house. Madison's median home was built around 2001, but leaks, condensation on cool ducts and framing during humid summers, and storm water can wet materials in any home. EPA says if you clean up mold but don't fix the water problem, the mold will most likely come back, so quotes should start with the moisture source.

Is part of Madison in Limestone County?

Yes. Most of Madison is in Madison County, but the city also extends into Limestone County. Mold work itself has no county or state license in Alabama, but if a job includes rebuild work over $10,000, ask the company for its Home Builders Licensure Board (HBLB) license number. This is general information, not legal advice.

Should I test for mold before getting quotes?

Usually not if you can already see it. EPA says that in most cases, if visible mold growth is present, sampling is unnecessary, and ADPH states that testing for molds is not recommended. Testing can make sense for hidden problems or clearance checks after work is done. Typical air sample testing runs $250–$350 nationally (Bob Vila, 2024), an estimate only.
